WebRank SEO by ProbCOMP

Although Alexa site rankings are based on data collected from its toolbar, which is not installed by the majority of Internet users or even available for some popular browsers such as Safari, Alexa’s search results should still be an important part of your marketing plan.

Despite its flaws, Alexa can provide data about a website that is not available from any other source. These include (to name just a few):

  • Your website’s ranking
  • What sites link to yours.
  • Comprehensive traffic statistics.
  • Site thumbnails.
  • Speed of loading

You can also use Alexa as a keyword search tool, which is helpful for evaluating your competition as well as for finding better keywords for your own site. You can also use that data to find out who links to your competition and to raise your own rankings.

Although the Alexa toolbar is available only for Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome, you can check the Alexa site stats in other browsers through the use of a plugin. For example, WebRank SEO by ProbCOMP (pictured) provides Alexa stats as well as Google PageRank, Compete and Quantcast rankings, traffic graphs, social statistics, whois info, indexed pages and backlinks in Bing and Google.

Alexa also has its own spider, and a listing on Alexa can boost your own web ranking. You can submit your site to Alexa at alexa.com, but you might first want to type in your domain name first to see if it is already listed.

Alexa rankings, along with Google PageRank and other metrics, can be useful in gauging the success and traffic of other sites and blogs, which can aid you in deciding if you want to pursue ad swaps with or submit guest articles to such sites.

Remember that Alexa ranking is geared more to the actual number of visitors to a site, while Google PageRank is more heavily influenced by the number of other influential sites that point to it. This is why a site with a reasonably good Alexa rank may have a poor PageRank and vice versa.

Alexa’s site info page gives its global traffic rank as well as its rankings in the country from which it is currently being viewed. It’s reputation scores shows the number of sites linking in. It shows historical data and a graph for sites ranking below 100,000, as well as the top keyword searches that are used by people to find the site, a very useful feature for finding keywords to target.

If you want to evaluate your competition and gain a competitive edge, then Alexa can be an invaluable tool. While you shouldn’t take its data as gospel, it can be useful in comparing similar sites to one another, to spy on your competition and ultimately to get more traffic.
